2011 Wrap Up

The last quarter of 2011 was packed with activity but before we get cracking into the New Year here’s a brief wrap up of what we’ve had going on.

Following the manic s#@! fight that was HAPPY FEET TWO and BAIT 3D, we had a small reprieve before launching into orchestration on the feature MINE GAMES (music by Alies Sluiter)

We produced the music and sound for a 30min short THE BOY WHO NEVER SAW RAIN directed by Kim Ramsay. We’ve also been in discussions for two more shorts coming up – DEAR LIFE, directed by Daniel Monks (staring Max Cullen), and MY MOTHER HER DAUGHTER directed by Erin Good. Our previous collaborative project with Erin, ABBIE, continues to do well on the festival circuit and has pocketed a number of awards in the past few months including:
* Best Youth Short Film, BOFA Film Festival
* Best Film – Bright Young Things Festival 2011
* Best Actor, Milwaukee Short Film Festival
* Honorary Mention in the Best Film category, Milwaukee Short Film Festival

Late last year we began a new collaboration with SLR Productions recording dialogue for the animation series TEENAGE FARIYTALE DROPOUT. The 52 episode series will be keeping us busy and inducing hilarity over the coming months.

Lanie Lane’s album TO THE HORSES – produced by Chris recorded and mixed at our studio, debuted at No 12 on the Aria album charts! This followed the successful release of the HOPE CHEST single from Jack Colwell’s forthcoming album Picture Window. Amongst other things, Chris is making long-players with Terry Serio’s Ministry of Truth and Newcastle art-pop band Post-Paint. Both due for release in the first half of 2012.

We have been making some inroads in the world of gaming with two games currently on our slate for music and sound. TRIANGLE MAN, a platform game by Convict Interactive, is to be released as part of a collection of games for Xbox Live Indie Games, and PARTICULARS from Throw The Looking Glass and Ark Games that seeks to bring high-energy particle physics to the world of popular video games. The game is targeted for release on PC, iOS, XBLA and PSN. Convict Interactive and the game were part of a feature on ABC3’s Good Game Spawn Point late last year.

The podcast series THE PROCESS, recorded at Studio Ripple, wrapped up for 2011 with interviews from actors Dan Wylie and Anita Hegh, director Sam Strong, choreographer Kate Champion, playwright Lally Katz, dancer Elma Kris and composer Steve Francis. We’re looking forward to some exciting new interviews in 2012.

HAPPY FEET 2 and BAIT

It’s been a busy month for Studio Ripple having just finished orchestrating on the features HAPPY FEET TWO and BAIT alongside Jigsaw music. Although both aquatically themed, to two films couldn’t have been further apart on the genre spectrum, with HAPPY FEET TWO, (written and directed by George Miller) an animated adventure musical about dancing penguins, and BAIT (directed by Kimbell Rendall) a horror action shark thiller. Oscar nominated composer John Powell again scored the music for the HAPPY FEET franchise whilst BAIT was composed by the Singaporean composers Joe Ng and Alex Oh.

HAPPY FEET TWO is due for release in november. BAIT is due for release later in the year.

The Process Podcast has launched

The Process Podcast, a series of interviews with leading Australian based artists working in the performing arts is available now through iTunes. Interviewed by writer and dramaturg Joshua Tyler, and recorded at Studio Ripple in Sydney, The Process Podcast provides an intimate platform for conversation about artistic process; the practice of creating theatrical work, the daily creative habits of artists, the similarities between disciplines and lessons and advice that can be passed on to others.

The first batch of guests include Playwright Lally Katz (Neighbourhood Watch, Black Swan of Trespass), Director and Artistic Director of Griffin Theatre Company Sam Strong (Speaking in Tongues, Madagascar, The Power of Yes), and Choreographer and Artistic Director of Force Majeure Kate Champion (Not in a Million Years, The Age I’m In).

Joshua Tyler says “Australia is home to some of the worlds leading players in the arts and yet there are no podcasts that focus specifically on Australian artists and their daily practice. While hearing international artists from the United Kingdom and America might well be entertaining, these podcasts lack immediate relevance to Australian artists and audiences.

It’s important that we acknowledge the work of our peers and colleagues, and that that we revere our own great artists as much as their international counterparts.”

Updated monthly, future guests will include leading playwrights, choreographers, designers, composers, artistic directors, dancers, actors, dramaturgs and directors nationwide. Listeners can subscribe to The Process Podcast on iTunes to automatically download each new interview.

Theme for ABC’s Crownies recorded at Studio Ripple

Lanie Lane is getting lots of attention lately, and the ABC are the latest to catch on. Her song, “What Do I Do?” – recorded and mixed by Chris at the Ripple studio, is the theme for the new ABC drama “Crownies“. Behind the scenes footage from the recording of her new album, also aired in a recent episode of the ABC’s Art Nation. The album, recorded and mixed by Chris, is due for release mid-october through Ivy League.

Latest projects screened this month

Studio Ripple’s latest projects to hit the big and small screen this month are the controversial TVC for the Governments Carbon Tax and a Feature documentary screening as part of this month Sydney International Film Festival. It was great to see the level of debate created by the Say Yes Australia carbon tax campaign. My America, the feature documentary by the filmmaker Peter Hegedus, screened at the Sydney Festival on friday 10th June and is in official contention for the FOXTEL Australian Documentary Prize. The music was composed by the Award winning composer Caitlin Yeo, and Studio Ripple collaborated with Caitlin on orchestration, music editing and the music production and score preparation. Angus O’Sullivan also collaborated with Caitlin to compose some additional music for the film.

Voice of the Industry – Inside Film

Hush – Short film

Dan Baker has recently finished the score for Hush, a short film directed by former AFTRS grad Marco Ianniello. The score written for string quartet was recorded at the Ripple studios in a session that went down to the wire, the final cue finishing with 2 mins to spare, phew!!! Hush is currently in the final stages of post production and will hit the festival circuit soon after.

The Killer Elite

The Studio Ripple team have just finished up their latest collaboration with Jigsaw on orchestration for THE KILLER ELITE. The score is the latest from composers Johnny Klimek and Reidhold Heil who brought you TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN, for which Studio Ripple was also involved. The recording sessions wrapped up last week at Trackdown studios which saw over 65 players recorded over 3 days. THE KILLER ELITE, which stars (amongst other notable names) Robert de Niro and Clive Owen, is due for release later this year.

Highly Commended at the APRA Professional Development Awards

Although just missing out on the top prize both Geri Green and former AFTRS classmate Angela Little were “highly commended” at the award ceremony on March 14th. Pretty high praise given the calibre of the competition with over 30 talented composers from around Australia shortlisted as finalists.
Our congratulations go out to our good friend Caitlin Yeo who won the Award.

ABBIE Screens on Qantas Flights

The short film ABBIE, which Geri composed the music for at the end of 2010, has been selected to screen on QANTAS domestic flights throughout February. So if you’re headed for the skies be sure to check it out.Abbie will also be screening at Metro Screen on February 23 from 4pm-6pm at Chavuel Cinema.

Abbie was funded as part of Metro Screens First Break initiative and it will screen along with the other films funded through this program.
